This diagram illustrates the main steps (called "milestones") of the LIGO e-Lab:

The diagram is a road map which takes you through an e-Lab. Another name for the map is a workflow diagram. The dots Image:interaction_point.gif along the top represent the milestones, which are tasks that you must master in order to move on to the next. The main milestones are

  1. Get Started
  2. Figure it Out
  3. Tell Others

The paths under each milestone show the steps required to complete that particular milestone. These are described in more detail below.

The Basics

The steps known as "the basics" are optional. They are basic skills which you may or may not already have. It might be good to review them even if you have mastered them before. Or it might be good to address these skills when they become relevant to your investigation.

  1. Simple Measurements
  2. Simple Calculations
  3. Simple Graphs
  4. Creating a Research Questions
  5. Developing Research Plans

Get Started

This step prepares the team to design and plan the investigation.

  1. Describe the science goals of LIGO.
  2. Explain the need for LIGO to study seismic data.
  3. Identify locations of LIGO seismometers.
  4. Practice using Bluestone to make plots of LIGO seismic data.
  5. Develop a Research Question.
  6. Develop a research plan to answer your Research Question.

Figure it out

  1. Analyze data to answer your research question.
  2. Test your answer.
  3. Improve your answer.

You may need to repeat these steps as needed to home in on a final result.

Tell Others

  1. Assemble the evidence supporting your result.
  2. Publish your conclusions as a Poster
  3. Discuss your results with your peers.
