What is it?
A cool feature of Google Earth is the ability to save geographical information in a "placemarks file." The file can then be shared with others, who can "visit" the placemarks via Google Earth or Google Maps.
Create Placemark
How to create a placemark, and then how to save it to a placemarks file:
- Run Google Earth.
- Navigate to your desired location.
- From the toolbar click Add => Placemark

There is also a push-pin button in the controls box (at least on the Mac version) which you can also use to create a placemark. - A form pops up which allows you to set the name of the placemark, edit the coordinates, add a description of the placemark, or adjust the viewing angle or altitude.
Click 'OK' to save the placemark. You have now created a placemark in Google Earth. - From the toolbar click File=> Save=> Save Place as. You have now created a .kmz file of your placemark.
You can create several placemarks, then drag them to a folder in Google Earth, and then save the entire folder to create a placemarks file containing multiple placemarks.
Edit Placemark.
Normal
- Right click the placemark and choose edit.
- From the Window that pops up you can edit details.
Advanced
You can rename .kmz file to .zip or .rar and then open and view/edit doc.kml as desired. Rename back to .kmz
