I'd expect a null result from this kind of investigation, which could be a discouraging first experience with science.

It would show them the principle of testing a null hypothesis, in this case that there is no statistical relationship between seismic activity and UFO sightings.

But if it's something that you are personally interested in, then it might be something you might think of trying here.

I'll give it a shot once I can export the data for the plots. It should be easier to manage the data at that point.

I was going to add this idea but I had to think about it, whether its too radical.

We want to encourage students to apply the scientific method to all observable phenomena. I am a skeptic to these claims of extra-terrestrial visits but there are many sightings of unexplained events and some claims they correlate to extreme gravimetric disturbances.

Kids are fascinated by UFOs. This might be something to get them interested in Bluestone

So I suggest a group of 4 students get a random sample of UFO sightings. They may do an extensive survey using some existing databases I encountered within the time-frame, then randomly pick 100 sightings from that list. Get the exact date and time, and record the plots. They should be able to use that data to do some inferential statistics, maybe a Chi-Square test. My stats are a bit rusty lately.

Too radical?

I had a couple ideas. How about variations due to tidal effects which should correlate to the moon? Maybe you hit on that here:

Tilt sensors

1. Are there any periodic patterns in tilt sensor data? If so, what are the periods, and what are the likely causes?

Is there a variation due to material the seismic waves pass through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabash_Valley_Seismic_Zone

The contrast is poor with text like this

Warning, this is TEST software, which may be unstable. Please report any bugs!

I hope to use this thread to post observable seismic events.

Since the user base will be High School Students, I thought we should start a thread on how this tool can integrate into the classroom. Here is an idea for a laboratory exercise, I don't know if all these questions could be analyzed eventually using Bluestone.

1) There was an Earth Quake on x date, class should divide into groups of 3 to find the time of the EQ.

2) Estimate magnitude of EQ

3) Estimate the geographic location
8) Message boards : Chamber of Secrets : How Do I tabulate the data? (Message 7679)

I would like to export the plots to a tabulated format so I can do my own analysis. Is there a way to achieve this?

I am curious whether this tool can measure both the magnitude and direction of an event. Here I hope to record the magnitudes on the different stations and sensors.

This thread is dedicated to improving the visual appeal on Bluestone. While making suggestions, please consider the following parameters:

1) Eric would like to maintain the current layout of controls
2) A color scheme of Green, Blue and Black represent the beginner, Intermediate and Advanced
3) Other parameters?

Personally, I find the beginner pages difficult to look at, too information rich and the color scheme makes me dizzy. Some ideas I have.

1) Work on a better color scheme
a. Make it less green
b. Use textures: stones, thatched, bubbles, something more visually appealing
2) Drill down objects. Example
a. Time interval: 12 hours (estimated 12 frame files)
b. Time interval: [+] click on plus to expand
