The thread "making a good first impression" was originally about a new design for the first page of the Unofficial BOINC wiki. I'd still welcome discussion on that page, but let's move that to the "talk" page that goes with it (which you will find here).

This reminds me. Before we can deploy that page to the UBW there need to be three more pages to which it can link to, for the three main divisions it suggests.

Meanwhile, the thread got turned into a very interesting and useful discussion of how to make a web site accessible via a spoken interface (starting here). I'm starting this thread for a continuation of that discussion, and locking the other thread (for now).

A large education for me on this topic since Lee Carre came aboard.
I was interested enough to install Thunder screenreader and turn down brightness on my monitor until I could barely see it. What a frightning time I had learning how to use this software in that state, but the voice commands and statements were a comfort and helped me confirm what I thought I saw on the screen.

I think you're missing the point. Visually imparied users aren't going to "see" anything (that's why they're using an audio browser/screen reader), what's important is how the page "sounds" to them, and if how it "sounds" is (easilly) comprehendable.
What is the difference between the 2 implementations in how the read a page to a user?

Obviouly it makes more sense to have it visually layed out like thunder does, but again, that's missing the point, it'll probably be read abouth the same as JAWS. Besides, JAWS is the most popular screen reader anyway - good luck trying to get everyone to change lol.
Fangs is an emulator afterall, designed to replicate what would be "spoken" but as text to aid speedy testing/development by sighted developers.

I did miss the point. Also, if I didn't use small visual clues I might have noticed sooner that speech pauses do not occur at line breaks but rather at punctuation. It just happens that often punctuation is at the end of a line. Or near the start of a line (ie Link23: )

If I were to try to update my site to be reader friendly I think I'd want to see a display like thunder's for easier reference.

Sometimes Thunder's display more closely mirrors what is being spoken. For instance reader pronounces Link 1, Link 2 etc. as shown in Thunder's display, but only referred to as a link in Fangs.

I wanted to avoid the longer download and trial conditions, but I should install JAWS and try it out I suppose...

I also tried out Thunder.

It was very disconcerting at first. But as I got used to it, I found it easier to navigate.

I do very little web design. Just a few tutorials for some forums. But on my next round of edits for those pages I'll be putting them through Thunder.

Thanks for the education Lee.
