This version of the 'lalanne' application is the same as previous versions, with minor changes to bring it in line with BOINC 5.5. It was built with BOINC 5.5.12 for Windows and Linux. Further release notes are here.

Not sure if this is Pirates or BOINC but my HT Pentium 2.6 failed to start a second process after finishing Lalane.

I have come by only 2 wu so far, but...
First wu came and went unnoticed and seemed to process okay.
Second wu I noticed and viewed graphics.
While graphics were running the internet connection was unexplainably terminated (similar to problem I had with yello) and DUN reconnected. Then a few seconds later I was booted from the net again, but when DUN tried to dial up I got a short thrash from the modem and BSOD.

Noticed the same behavior on my Opteron. It seems to not start a new task when the last of multiple processes finishes.

Yea, once the graphics show, even if I close right after, there's no telling how long the workunit will take.
I guess it's the design that the captain implemented, to make the workunits longer to those who watch the graphics. It would be like a kind of reward but then again most people don't, and so when the quorum is set the lower claims (of those who didn't run the graphs) are selected for granting.

I was on the lookout for the app running on 1 host and took a look at the graphics on 2 of the WUs when i saw them running.... both WUs then errored out due to exceeding max CPU time....

The third result did not validate coz it was returned too late (16 mins after it was sent?!?!?!). have seen this behavior before where 2 results are returned, the WU validated and any subsequent results are not granted credit.

All 3 results are on this host

Yaaarrr, them spinnin squares and all were a nice reward though in itself! At leasts i had me grog to keep me going!

Mine went fine, I opened the graphics and let them run. I took some screendumps of them and a little movie, I'll post as soon as Photobucket it up again.

But, the last one apparently reported too late because of that with no credit for it, and that sucks!

http://pirates.spy-hill.net/workunit.php?wuid=305746

C'mon, Cap'n, you get treasures (information) from me and you won't pay me my share?! :-(

I have another of those without opening the graphics though. :-/

The problem with starting another project after, I don't see:

I was observing the apps' CPU time - it moves very nonlinearly. The short (usual without graphics) units stay somewhere arounf 3.5% and at two minits the result is suddenly finished, the log one (with graphics displayed) was mostly at 35% during the rest of 20 minutes run, then jump to finished.

Would whipping the app help it somehow to show correct time progress? ;-)

Caught one of these while it was crunching. Enabling the graphics let it run for 20 min instead of the usual 2 before completion.

Is it helpful to have the graphics enabled during the crunching if you catch it, or does it not make a difference to the data obtained?

Nice!
I finally see patterns I can reproduce every time.

  • If I run graphics first and then try to dial-up I can't connect until terminating the graphics (3 times so far).
  • When running graphics or screensaver and uploading or downloading work I always (6 times so far) get kicked off the net.

worker: graphics NEVER initialzed!

Hi Ageless,
This is what you get if you let the wu run without opening the graphics. If you are lucky enough to catch a wu in the act and open up the graphics you will get the pretty pictures and something like this when it finishes;

main: compiled with BOINC version 5. 5.
worker: Starting from scratch.
worker: trying boinc_get_init_data()...
GFX: app_graphics_init() called.
GFX: app_graphics_resize(632, 446) called.
GFX: app_graphics_resize(800, 574) called.
GFX: boinc_app_key_press(40,22020097)
GFX: boinc_app_key_release(40,-1051721727)
GFX: boinc_app_key_press(17,1900545)
GFX: boinc_app_key_release(17,-1071841279)
GFX: boinc_app_key_press(17,1900545)
GFX: boinc_app_key_release(17,-1071841279)
GFX: boinc_app_key_press(90,2883585)
GFX: boinc_app_key_release(90,-1070858239)
GFX: boinc_app_key_press(56,589825)
GFX: boinc_app_key_release(56,-1073151999)
worker: begining of the end - poster display begins...
worker: end of the end - poster display is done..
worker: CPU time: 985.328125 seconds, Wall clock time: 1044.781250 seconds
worker: graphics WERE initialized.
worker: all done
Blow me down!

I pressed a few buttons to see if I could move the graphics about, to no avail. The GFX: lines appear to be a key-logger, presumably to make sure it doesn't fall over when the user presses some buttons (I seem to recall the early Einstein screen saver failed with a press of F4 or something)
I missed the poster display, whatever that is.
The wu takes longer to finish with the graphics open but there is no bonus credit for trying to play with it.

This error code is due to a problem with library incompatibility between the client machine (yours) and the machine on which it was built (mine). It's not your fault, it's something I should be able to deal with here. I hope to improve the build process so that this doesn't happen. Meanwhile, this is useful for testing. If it all worked, there'e be nothing left to test.

Perhaps the new file attachment facility can be used for long log files? It handles text files too, not just images.

As a good Pirate with a lot of self-esteem, I am nowhere near superstitious. Yet when Pirates asks for 666 seconds of work consistently, I wonder if we shouldn't pillage a church. ;-)

Here are the statistics for lalanne 5.02:

Version OS Total Results Pass Rate Fail Rate
502 Linux 887 77.23 22.77
502 Windows 12925 98.95 1.05
I think it should be possible to increase the pass rate on Linux by improving the compile process.

No, I'm flattered. Except for the quality is not the best, but it's about 13 MB, so I'm afraid it's too big to attach to here, so you can take it yourself and place it a better place than Photobucket.

And no, it's not sand in your ears, it's the fan of my computer, you can hear. ;-D

Sorry.
