Message 3530 - Posted: 1 Aug 2006 | 16:10:54 UTC

We now have some new forum features which I would invite the pirate crew to test out before I release it on decent human beings.

* You can (indeed must) iteratively edit your postings, with a preview to show you what will be posted.

* Keyword classification: select an (optional) keyword which applies to this posting. Right now the choices are from th LIGO eLog, but I invite suggestions for pirate keywords.

* File attachments: you can upload an image or data file attached to your posting. To do so, check the "add attachment" box while composing, and then Preview your posting and further dialogue will appear.

Keep in mind that the files are uploaded to the server, they are not web links. You should only attach files which you have the right to copy or distribute (no warez or mp3's). Forum moderators will be able to hide inappropriate attachments, or delete them altogether.

This is the first draft, so we know there are bugs on board. Your job is to find them. If I don't hear yea or nay then I'll assume posting is really broken and revert to the old stuff. Otherwise, have at it.

I want one of these things...

edit - signatures dont work in preview. I see the BB Code rather than the sig itself. Is this by design?

No, it was by omission. Now they should show correctly. Thanks for pointing it out.

What is the keyword for?

The keyword feature is probably not that important for the BOINC forums, but both the keyword and attachment features make the forums more like an on-line logbook, which will be used by students to record their observations and data as they participate in the LIGO e-Labs.

You can see the similarity to the LIGO detector logbooks for Hanford and Livingston.

Students working through an e-Lab have to address certain "milestones" as they progress, and the keyword feature will allow them to indicate that a particular log entry applies to a particular milestone. Other similar uses are also possible.

Indeed, it's not. Each time the image is loaded it has a new name and a new copy is put in the "viewing area".

This will hopefully go away as I work on how the files are handled internally, but it's also a mechanism I intend to use to implement more private "file lockers" where students can store the results of their work. There will also be a "poster" area where they can report their final results, and this may need to be more private until time to release the posters.

Indeed, it should not work that way. The image in the corner is just an icon representing the attached file. If the file is an image file then you get a smaller version of it ('thumbnail'). If it's another file type (eg. Google Earth Placemarks) then you get an icon indicating the file type.

Yes, the features (especially the message preview) are working very nice.

I noticed that the user's description at the message's left side is a little bit loose, like half empty line between each of Forum/Project xxxxx, Joined, Posts, ID, From, Team, Credit & Rac lines. I liked it more packed together as like it was before.

Good eye, sailor. I've been tweaking the CSS and that seems to have affected that table too. I'll add that to the buglist.

Thanks, Capt'n. And, good morning there, Capt'n!

An I noticed also the quote=someone addition, fine too. Seems not to be automatic though. Maybe to note it in the BBCode tags list?

And, will the preview and attachment etc. work also while editing an existing post too?

Well now, it seems we need a glossary for our pirate crew. Then they can look words up in it, or link to it like so: [[microseism]]

(Enclosing a word in double square brackets (thus: [[ microseism ]] ) makes a link to the glossary wiki.
(For other BOINC projects the link is to the BOINC wiki -- try it))

Part of that has been in the forum code for a while, so I just make the output correct. Previously the name was simply ignored, so it was a feature waiting to be implemented.

It won't work on any other BOINC site, yet. But yesterday I submitted a bug report to the boinc_dev list to fix a more general bug related to quoted text, and it includes a fix to enable this feature.

It's not automatic when quoting a post... yet. But I would like to make it automatic when replying to a specific post. As you have suggested, I've added it to the BBcode help.

And, will the preview and attachment etc. work also while editing an existing post too?

Right now you can only edit the text of your previous post (for 1 hour), nothing else. And since the "preview before posting" feature should make it less necessary to re-edit a post, I don't think I will make the after-posting editing any easier. At least not right now.

Well, sort of.

Images loading from this site for the file attachments are quicker.

But loading the thread is now slowed down quite a bit by the stats images in signature files.

Quoting a quote looks okay.
This should be implemented on all BOINC forums! So should the post preview, but i'm guessin' it's not kind to server bandwidth.

I've seen multiple quoting over at SETI an it can be quite distracting. The more nested quotes the worse it gets.

EDIT: Wonder if it will stretch the thread?

It will eventually strech the thread. Reducing the right indent should reduce the problem.

The margin and padding on blockquote (in the CSS) is what's causing the stretch. Try replacing the CSS with something like this:

blockquote.postbody {
border: 2px inset blue;
background-color: #f0f0ff;
margin:0; padding:.5em;
font-style: oblique;
}

Seems like (code)(pre)(size=nn) pre-formatted code snippet (/size)(/pre)(/code) could be THE combination for displaying some code snippets!!
[size=12]blockquote.postbody { border: 2px inset blue; background-color: #f0f0ff; margin:0; padding:.5em; font-style: oblique; }[/size]

Looks like my post stretched the thread once more...

The margin-right in the CSS is 120px (or so) to make room for any attachment which might be included in a reply, as demonstrated here. (It could use some tweaking, esp. to deal with long file names.) This causes quotes of quotes of quotes to have very wide right margins.

So be it. I'd like to discourage over quoting anyway.

But we can make some adjustments.

And thank you for the offer of some code, master yoda. That's the spirit.

Huh?

So they take the raw output from a seismometer and filter it by frequency so that only the signals between 0.1 and 0.3 Hertz remain. That is the "microseism" band.

Other bands are also possible, such as from 0.3 to 1.0 Hertz, 1.0 to 3.0 Hz, or 3-10 Hz. Each contains some interesting information, but generally from different kinds of sources.

I've just noticed, while writing a message: when I select any Keyword, the message editor's preview part gets suddenly narrower, only half width of the browser's window (the same as the edit box). If I deselect the Keyword, the preview part is again much wider than the edit box.

What I notice is that this thread loads really slowly, even on my highspeed internet connection. 33 seconds to load 50 posts is not something to look forward to when the thread gets bigger.

Is that an effect of the server, or the forum code?

Also, when having done a preview already, then chosing a keyword, I have to do another preview before I can post. A bit too much.

Lastly, what's with the broken avatars?

Neither. It seems to be hanging waiting for all the stat blocks in signatures to load. I am not sure how those sites work, but it seems that the images they generate don't get cached.

Also, when having done a preview already, then chosing a keyword, I have to do another preview before I can post. A bit too much.

Agreed. It came out that way in the first round of coding, and requiring at least one preview is important. But I also don't like this and will fix it when I can. And a few other small things.

Lastly, what's with the broken avatars?

Avatars or signatures?

Oh and spiderweb quotes is a no-no. They will stretch threads and make things illegible. :(

Most of the loads are coming from pirates.spy-hill.net

I just reloaded the thread to see it.

P.S: How about adding an option to preview again when editing a post?

1. If I select "Add Attachement" I need to do another preview in order to add an attachement.
2. Each preview results in reloading all of the other posts, which takes quite a time for long threads.

edit:

3. As other pointed out the images seems not to get cached.
4. The options, "Preview", "Add signature", "Add attachement" and "Add keyword" are not available when I edit my post.

I will likely add that some day, but it's not a high priority right now. Since you can preview your posting you should be able to 'get it right' the first time. But I realize that some errors are found after you hit the post button, so the edit for an hour facility is still needed.

If you forget an attachment, then just start a new posting.

This has been fixed. You are still required to preview at least once, but selecting a keyword does not hide the post button as it used to.

I've tried repeatedly download this thread (MS Win IE), following comments are my assumptions.

It took maybe up to 5 seconds (also because of latencies) to start and finish downloading the html code for the page, then some items started to be downloaded (I assume the avatars and other pictures like thumbnails and stats), counting down from maybe 49. The complete times were each time between 25 and 35 seconds.

BUT! when repeatedly previewing new post, the html code for the whole page took again the 5 seconds to start and finish, bud I've noticed only 2-3 other items to download ( all from mundayweb :) which took up to 5 seconds.

So there is definitely a difference how is the page (+avatars etc.) generated during post preview and normal reading.

I'm now testing this, by turning off the display of the entire (possibly much too long) thread when one composes a reply.

...I've noticed only 2-3 other items to download ( all from mundayweb :) which took up to 5 seconds.

The stats in sigs are what slow it down for me, and unfortunately I have little control over this, short of removing them from the sigs. Is it possible for these sites to also control their "expire" headers so that they are not constantly reloaded? Does anybody here have any connections with these sites?

I am seeing avatars here, but I've just set the expire time explicitly, which might help with caching those as well.

Is it possible for these sites to also control their "expire" headers so that they are not constantly reloaded? Does anybody here have any connections with these sites?

I've asked Neil Munday (Mundayweb) and Zain Upton (Boinc Synergy).

I am seeing avatars here, but I've just set the expire time explicitly, which might help with caching those as well.

I see them in preview mode, not always after I posted something. Might be my local cache that needs updating though.

Hah, no, it's after I edit my post that the avatars get broken 9 out of 10 times!

I'm now testing this, by turning off the display of the entire (possibly much too long) thread when one composes a reply.

But I really could see the whole thread at the moment, it happened maybe 10 minutes later that the other posts were stripped off while replying.

But I noticed now that going into this thread from outside takes the same small amount of seconds as when I was previewing my message (as I reported previously), but refreshing this page takes 1/2 minute.

I'm now behind an unfriendly proxy, I will try once more few hours later when I'm outside. Maybe the proxy is problem in my case and invalidates everything upon (soft - F5) refresh (should happen only upon hard refresh AFAIK - Ctrl-F5). Stay tuned...

(BTW, no broken stats or avatars on my side.)

No, this must be two separate issues. The e-mail server is placed in different company at least 500 miles away and should not (and did previously not) deny any access from friendly pirates' page - or because of some changes or system settings I am not (and would like to be) aware of. I've now subscribed to another 2 threads and will wait... (would like to solve any e-mail problem here).

Trying now from outside of the proxy - it behaves similarly. Going into the thread takes nice 5-10 seconds (because of 2-3 slower images), refreshing the page takes approx. 1/2 minute. I'd say everything's OK from my point of view.

Sig loading is also slow here....

Avatars are working no bother

Not loading the whole thread in preview is a far beter idea!

edit - After preview, any chance you could put the "post" button closed to the preview? its hidden away on the right hand side of the page under the Keyword drop down...

edit 2! - problem? the botton of the longer sigs is cut off....

That's intentional, and I don't think it's a problem. I've found these long stats sig blocks to be very annoying.

I made the maximum vertical size about the same as the smaller sig blocks. If you want text as well then you should put it to the side, not on top or below.

I'm open to suggestions or discussion about the size given to this or other ideas, but I wanted to put a little restraint on the huge stats images.

Fair enough on the sigs... doesnt bother me! (edit - if they are cut that is!!)

This may be an issue ... or at least something to note... Opera is reporting this thread size, including images as 1.2MB. A bit of further playing around and I can see that the vast majority of this data is coming from pirates.spy-hill.net.

There is a little from a couple of other sites... but certainly 60 or 70% of the load time is all coming from pirates....

Thanks for the report. Can you identify any particular files/images which are responsible?

When I implemented the file attachments I 'cheated' and let the broswer resize the image instead of creating thumbnails on the server. It seems that to reduce the load I should create the thumbnails (once) and serve those rather than the full file.

Eric, I got an answer from Neil Munday:

"Hi Jord,

As the images are created dynamically (i.e. on the fly), so the user's browser's won't cache the images (as far as I know).

I have plans to introduce static images to reduce the need for my mirror sites and only updates user's graphics on a daily basis or when they make a config change.

I have written most of the code for this, but alas, I haven't had time recently to finish it off.

To be honest though, the fetching of the stats etc takes microseconds. It's more likely that the slow performance is a result of the user's PC having to download all the graphics.

Hope this helps,

Neil."

(PS: I had to preview this text twice before I could post it!)

Ok... I have traced a page reload with Ethereal. I'm not familiar with the software but it seems to be taking lot of time from requesting the last image file to completing the page load. (16 seconds?)

Is this file "/view/3639-sp_gold_one_cs_gif.gif" particularly big?

I am by no means familiar with ethereal so I may be way off the mark.

I can upload the capture file from my refresh if you want?

Also, on a couple of runs, one of the munday web mirrors (?? maybe?!) appears to be a little slow to respond... wolfensystems.com. I could see a few requests for what appear to be the same file taking a while to come back. Not on all reloads, just some....

Thanks.

One thing that might be easy for him to do is simply include an "expires" header in the reply with the dynamically created image. If the time is "now + 1 day" then most browser's won't go back to fetch the image yet again until after that time. For the static images I'm dealing with I have done something similar using mod_expire for Apache, both for attachments and avatars.

I've also just had another look at how the file attachments are put in place in the 'viewing area', and I may have been able to eliminate some unnecessary file copying. That might help speed things up on this server.

Paul@home wrote:

No, it's not. But I've found the ones that are. Firefox has a 'media' tab under Tools->Page Info which lists all images on a page, with their size and expiration time. (This is the Mac version. The linux version alas does not report those.) I stepped through the thread, and most images are a few kilobytes at best -- nothing big at all. With a couple of exceptions:

The graph of the earthquake I attached is rather large, as is Jupiter (the cat, though the planet is of course also large). And at least one of the stats blocks in a signature is significantly larger than the others.

So one thing I can do to speed things a bit is to generate thumbnails of images when they are uploaded as attachments. That will take some time, but it's good to know in any case.

If the stats sites added an "expires" header with a time 1 hour or 1 day in the future that would also prevent reloading each time the thread is viewed.

Thanks to everybody for testing this thread, it's very useful to get this kind of feedback.

This file is actually 12kb (144x143) and is from the BOINC site graphics pages.

Just to stress test at the end of a long thread, this one is the larger version, 56k 423x429, from the same source.

When we speek of bugs, take a look at the messages (in this thread. e.g. 3530), which has a picture attached to it. If I observe a thread with such message (with IE7), the beginning of the message text is pressed to some inch on the left side of the message frame, while flowing to the left of the attached picture and uses then the whole message frame width under the picture.

While editing a new message, I've noiced that the messages with pictures are formated correctly. Except that this thread is tooo stretched horizontally, although no "offending" pictures or text can be seen.

Maybe it is the common sense saying so?
(Or is it actually saying the opposite? Sorry, a bit tired, it's pretty late night here, can't decide for sure now ,-)

We now have a minor new feature in the forums. If you are subscribed to a thread, when you receive the notification it will include the text of the post (or the first 100 characters, if it's longer than than).

You aren't spending enough on internet bandwidth? ;-)

I'm sure that extra 100 characters (or often less) will really add to the load. :-)
