I have made a post on Google earth showing boinc project campuses (thanks to Christian), a list of users (picked at random) near their hometown & a list of teams.

it can be found at the following

BOINC on Google Earth

Admin, I have identified the some HQ of the project campuses. If you have time, can you tell me where the Pirate base is, or is that to kept secret? If so i shall place you on the high seas!!!!

Either use this post or the GE if you want to be included on the post.

Very cool. Thanks.

I will have to ponder whether the top secret location of the Pirates base is worthy of adding to this display. :-)

Meanwhile, I enjoyed "flying" in to the two LIGO detectors. One small comment, though. You should adjust the names of the facilities. They are the LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) and the LIGO Livigston Observatory (LLO).

No offense taken, and some sarcasm is perhaps appropriate. Things have been quite slow around here lately.

So I just tried to download the file again, but it's the same file. It seems that if you post your KML file to their forums it saves a copy on their server, and so you always get that copy. (This is something I would like to add here.) But if you have made improvments to the file (such as changing "Hanford LIGO" to "LIGO Hanford Observatory", hint, hint :-) you need to post the revised file again.

In exchange for the changes I suggested, I'm willing to reveal the location of the Pirates home base. ;-)

Didn't post yet. I was messing around and trying to make improvements. I should be ready to post on Friday 31 PM.

Also looking into the possiblity of creating a network link, so that users don't have to d/l the file over and over again.

Will be delighted to show position of pirates. But also thought that a moving icon around the oceans could be cool. still have to figure that one out.

Well, curiosity got the better of me so I installed Google Earth and got the BOINC download. Very nifty. Thanks, bjango, for including me, though you have me marked a little north of my actual location. Put me in Richmond, B.C., specifically at the Foggy Dew Irish Pub in Richmond on Alderbridge Way. :)

[EDIT: Check that. Been playing around with Google Earth, and I did it myself (though I'm not sure the BOINC icon got saved too). Info for both myself and B.C. BOINC can be found here. You should be able to just copy and paste it in, if I have it right. ]

As an additional note, bjango, it appears, from my use of Google Earth anyway, that any user's label that includes a stat graphic from BOINCstats is not displaying it. I have no idea why, but they're not. (Mundayweb and BOINC Synergy stats graphics do appear on the label.)

I've noticed this myself. Mundaywed and synergy sig's are jpg's while boincstats sig's are gif's. I will try to discuss this with Willy at boincstats.

From creating other posts, I know that gif files do work.

Regarding your location, I place users in parks, roads, rivers, bays ie not directly over a house (don't want to be liable for anything) unless the exact locations have been given to me.

I will relocate your position to the foggy dew, on my next update this friday 7 april 06. Thank you for file. other updates include base of malariacontrol & pirates. some extra teams etc, i think the boinc users are catching on.

Dr. Bill I have you included in the next update. (croton on hudson, down stream of the pirates. (Wormholio can collect you on the way to sea.)

I see that now. Anyway, my location is in fact directly over my favourite pub, so, if anyone wants to find me, it's a good bet to start there, anyway! :) So you know, B.C. BOINC's "location" was a carefully chosen landmark on the campus of the University of Victoria.

bjango, I want to praise you for doing this, but first I want to curse you. ;-)

Because of your post I downloaded Google Earth and have spent far too much time flying around the world looking at places that I have visited, or lived, or would like to visit some day. I'm a pilot who has not had time to fly recently, but with the terrain turned on and a low view point and a little tug of the grabber hand I can at least get a little dose of simulated flight over the Catskills or Cascades It's been a great distraction which competes with the little time in the day I have already. Curse you.

That said, this is pretty cool. So thanks for doing it, and for the small label changes I requested. I'm giving a talk about LIGO in a few weeks and if it's possible I would like to fire up Google Earth and 'fly' the audience to the two LIGO sites, and perhaps visit GEO and VIRGO and TAMA. Much better than just a picture or a map.

As you've probably noticed from my .kmz file, I liked the ability to change the viewing direction and azimuth, and I attached my forum avatar image to the marker. That's probably too much customization for you to do for every person.

Which is why I'm posting. This seems like the ideal exercise in distributed effort. Each member of the crew who wants to post their position (or the position of a nearby park or pub :-) could create their own .kmz file for you to include in the larger list. Or since not everybody can run Google Earth (graphics card and CPU seem to be an issue) the teams could help members collect info for a team .kmz file, which you could then merge into the larger list. If you don't have a way for people to upload files to you we could use the debug upload page (here) to get them here, and I can then find a way to get them to you.

Speaking of teams, I don't see a point to adding a marker for a team. One might want a way to indicate a team founder/leader (piping on the sleeves for the Pirate crew? :-), but otherwise a team is a spread out thing not associated with any position on the globe. On the other hand, organizing members of teams into separate folders might be more useful than alphabetical folders. You decide what works best.

In any case, curse you and thank you. ;-)

I'm glad that you having fun on GE, there are some excellent posts and some bad ones too.

thank you for your help. it would be much appreciated if people can upload their positions here or onto the post on GE.

As for using GE time wise, i do waste a lot of time myself on it, either viewing placemarks or researching for posts of my own.

AS for the teams, another possibility is that each team could show all active members. We'll see as time goes on.

another thing is all those crunchers how are "international" where should they like to be or compromise their internationality by giving their exact location.

Thanks, Bjango.

I will use my position to advise the Captain of treasure moving up and down the Hudson.(Do we need a separate thread for that? :=) ) Of course, if the folks at West Point stretch that big chain across the river again, like they did during the revolution, it'll severly restict his movements downstream!

Of course, if the folks at West Point stretch that big chain across the river again, like they did during the revolution, it'll severly restict his movements downstream!

Naw, if they try that old trick I'll just get some sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads, and problem solved. :-)

update 3

7 April 2006.

What did i do this week? nothing much until I went to work this morning and spent most of the day viewing GE and doing some upates for the post.

The biggest thing this week was on the pirates forum.

anyways, what i did-

added
projects - Pirates @ home and malariacontrol.net.
projects to add - uFluids, Xtremelab, orbit, WCG

users. not many - those who asked, raven (location to be changed to local pub), KSMarksPsych, Dr Bill, Wormholio (many thanks for advice), Mchl and his file on Boinc @ poland members.
Raided forums (fora) of pirates, boinc @ australia, never got finsh list from Boincsynergy (sorry next week)

Teams.
Boinc @ Heidelberg
Boinc @ Poland
sar-Hessen

The biggest update of all was when you click on a project folder, a liitle brief of each project appears.

Thanks again to Wormholio, and bigger thanks to Mchl for giving location of Parkes oberservatory in Australia for SETI and position of Open university in Climate predicton.

Noel_B

PS I forgot to thank the lads at malariacontrol.net.

@Bjango

I can't find myself in Croton on Hudson, NY. Have you got me in stealth mode or am I misplaced?

Thanks.

I found you out in the middle of the river, though I do not remember if it was off Croton or somewhere else.

For what it's worth, if you turn on the airports you'll also find the Vassar Bros. Hospital airport in Poughkeepsie is also out in the middle of the river.

I've found that if I turn on outlines for bodies of water on Google Earth the outlines do not always match the satelite and topo info very well. Perhaps they are from different sources. More likely is that someone forgot to adjust for slightly different coordinate systems.

Found myself! (I hadn't enabled the lastest update under My Places.)

Do you have a spare sextant to lend Google so they can calibrate themselves? If they were producing treasure maps they'd have a problem. :-)

I place people in open spaces because I don't want to pick an exact house and have people knocking on your door (then you would be giving out to me) or coming in through the back window (then you will be making me walk the plank).

anyway as a pirate, on open water is better.

Yay! An update, an update!

(BTW, bjango, for some reason my team, "B.C. BOINC", is listed in C, not B. Just thought you should know.)

I tried to track railways in my area once... I was surprised to see that GE shows so many of them. In fact many of them don't exist and never did. Plus, they marked the (only) underground line in Warsaw as a railroad as well...

Anyway, just wanted to say, that I located Pirates HQ quite right, when I was doing my own research :) Being proud of myself.

Any new updates in the pipe, Bjango?

(I blame you for getting me hooked on Google Earth. I even made a simple placemark file myself here.)

unfortunately there is no interest. there are 700,00 + boinc users and only about 100 asked to be included (even though i did log the position of about 500 by searching profiles and team sites etc.)

If there is no interest i'm not gonna waste my time(that may sound selfish), i'm having to much fun on the fun and games section of GE.

I will continue to update the post as new projects come on stream. new projects are thin on the ground at the moment (open projects that is).

I read your post and will respond soon.

at least you, wormholio and some others enjoyed the post.

Noel.

Noel

I just wanted you to know that I really enjoyed it as well.

I lost my copy of GE a few months back with a reformat/reinstall. I'll have to DL it again and play around some.
