I downloaded the following wu:

application: hello - Hello, BOINC World!
created: 8 May 2005 3:30:51 UTC
name: world_1115523051

this wu was sent: 8 May 2005 8:31:10 UTC
and I completed and returned it: 8 May 2005 9:09:38 UTC

results are here
Host ID 14785
Result ID 399287

yet there is another host 7722 who has Time Reported Or Deadline written in Red which is the exact same time as it was originally sent 8 May 2005 3:31:03 UTC.

Which seems to me to allow zero seconds for computation, whereas my computer took 109.50 seconds to complete.

I'm probably missing something, but it looks odd to me.

Oh, by the way this wu was done under BOINC 4.36, as soon as I uploaded all my completed wu's I installed 4.37 and so I don't have any thing in the messages tab to display regarding this particular wu.

Thanks.

This looks like the dread zero CPU bug. David Anderson said last month that he thought he had found and fixed it. It supposedly was a problem for applications which do not checkpoint (and 'hello' does not). Using either a client or app compiled with the patch should have fixed it. Hello 4.58 was compiled without the update, but BOINC 4.36 should have the fix in it, so this is strange.

I've compiled hello 4.59 with the latest updated code, which should include the fix, and we will see if that takes care of the problem.

Pirates@Home: Pass percentage by platform Version OS Total Result Pass Rate Fail Rate 459 Linux 181 86.19 13.81 458 Darwin 422 98.1 1.90 458 Linux 498 69.08 30.92 458 Windows 422 98.34 1.66

Since hello 4.58 was running fine on Windows and failing on Linux I've disabled the Windows version for a while to let the Linux boxes do a proper test, but we will test 4.59 on Windows too, and on Mac.

No screensaver for a bit (sorry) but there's at least a bit of work to keep the RAC from dropping to zero.

For the developers, if there are any, I've updated my notes on the Windows build environment.

Very cool!
Noticed a few zero cpu with BOINC 4.35 and 4.37 also.
If it goes away with hello 4.59 you will confirm Paul D. Buck hit the nail on the head again.
'0 cpu' problem solved? (LHC forum)
