Message 9109 - Posted: 16 Mar 2012 | 19:03:06 UTC

My apologies for leaving the crew adrift for so long with broken forums, and who knows what else. Here's the short story:

You may recall that back in November the server we had used for many years had a disk failure. At the time, I had just acquired an old spare PC that was twice as fast and half as noisy (still old crap, mind you) and so instead of just replacing the drive I moved everything to the "new" server. Which caused some trouble, but we made it through that.

Sometime around the end of January I got an impassioned plea to return that hardware to the person who had given it to me. It was easier to do so than argue, and I had to do it quickly. So I moved our project to another machine, even better than the other two, which had in a past life been a PVR project. The bad news is that I had no time to fix whatever broke in the process, which it seems included the forums.

So here we are 6 weeks later and I finally got a little time and I found the problem (some database code that needed updating). I seem to have the forums fixed, but who knows what else is broken?

So please take a look around, and report in this thread what else needs to be fixed. I'll get to it when I can do so, and we will try to get this leaky bucket lurching forward again under it's own steam.

One thing I'm seeing is that all forum posts and threads are considered to be new and unread. Pushing the "mark all threads as unread" button in the top-level of the message boards does not fix this. But it does seem to mark the posts as read once you read the forum. I will see if I can find the cause, and the fix...

I have to be the guy to ask - do you expect to have new work? Ever?

I remember running this project years ago (or whenever it was I joined BOINC). Or is there just not that much to test nowadays?

Currently this is a "fun" project and all work done on it does nothing. Captain Wormholio inserts work every now and then, but his life is busy with other things (family and such). We usually get work near September 19th (talk like a Pirate day) each year, plus maybe one or two times in between when time permits.

I am happy when there is work, but I also understand life can get in the way.

I have just received work for the first time in a long time, at least that I know of. I have a problem and I do not see an answer to. I have received 37 tasks and 15 have error while downloading. I have reattached all of my machines and downloaded them and it seems most wu's are erroring out on download for me. Just wondering if there is something I need to do or what. I would really like to see more work from here.
Thanks
Rick

Ah, now I'm getting some download errors. One is a newly attached machine, the other I detached and re-attached.

Seems to be a missing file in the the download.

Now will there be more treasure for the crew or do we need to go a-raiding?

Earlier today I got 11 o' them pesky failed tasks, same PC.

No resets/restarts/rejoins/updates, nary a single change but glad I could help with workin' jobs on the good ship Gallatin. Arrh!

Yarr! More tasks eaten. Arr!

That aside (hehe) I've noticed on various PCs that I have had trouble getting work due to other projects >seemingly< taking over (not true BTW) and Pirates therefore just not allowing work i.e., "not requesting/sending" tasks/computation is insufficient (or whatever) yet when I manually set said other projects to "Suspend" Pirates works fine albeit at 1 hour intervals.
This volunteer (ngarr! A new Pirate word?) testing has been very difficult to confirm due to Pirates stubbornly refusing any and all manual updates inside a 1 hour window.

updates inside a 1 hour window.

Arr Matey, Pirates has been this way since it went from being a productive project to just a fun project. It is unfunded, single owner person who has a life and keeps it around just to play with, when time permits. Since it is not a very powerful backend, the owner just allows 1 hour updates to allow everyone who is trying to get work, get work. It will also not always fill up all requested cores. Hitting that manual update also resets the clock to 1 hour from that click, so if you click at 59:59, you lose all that time. It also does not care about priorities. In fact it's best to just keep it at the same rate as your lowest project to allow it to maintain a flow. If you try and give it too much priority it actually hurts and will give you less work (found that out on a previous time).

This project is just for fun. It does nothing and keeps those of us who want to be Pirates every so often, to do just that. So, sit back, grab some rum and start singing some sea shanties while we have the work to crunch.

The latest BOINC back-end update broke the following Pirates' own code:
Project preferences:
Lucky Number is no longer retained.
Pirate Name is no longer retained.

Are they still in Apache?

Mine don't set, plus some of them were visible when the user posted in the forums, such as the Pirate Name.

I see that there's a difference between when we post and when we just look at people who already posted as well.

The first picture shows my 'account details' on a post I already did. The second shows the same 'account details' but now while I am posting this.

Another thing that is no longer functioning is the jump to end of the thread, no matter what we did (as long as we read the whole thing).
